Growing herbs, salads and more, seasonal awareness, discussing seed varieties, sharing harvests, healthy eating, environmentally better living, building communities, inspiring children. All happening on rooftops, balconies, window sills and wherever the city council allows. Brilliant! It seems to me, all of a sudden, we all get it. City and country folk alike.
This section of my farm site is devoted to passing on anything which may be useful to urbanites with a green thumb and a passion for cooking.
There are many different ways to grow successfully with only limited space so choose the one that fits your needs.
Most importantly, be realistic and above all, get a result! Don’t just stick a pot of herbs on a windowsill that wither and die. You could be turned off for life. Do some research and, for God’s sake, end up with a lettuce!
Another thing, while at Jonny’s soccer (my beautiful 10yr old son), Richard, a fellow soccer dad, told me stories of well meaning first time urban dwellers, planting into their tiny backyard patches, only to discover the soil contained a chemical footprint; possibly lead paint, diesel oil. Brings up the point, doesn’t it? Do a little research and planning. As my site grows, hopefully it will become a source of such information.
In the mean time, I am having a wonderful time with two self-contained, low maintenance balcony growing units from Elevated Gardens. In a nutshell, they are mini gardens that are close at hand, and they look to be providing me with a steady flow of quality produce. See their dedicated section for a full understanding of their set up and operation. Also, keep an eye on the growth of the produce I have planted in them, as I will be posting photos over time.
